Yucaipa, CA- Suveg Cellars has announced it’s 55th medal awarded in competition. Yucaipa’s first winery took home 6 medals at the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition this January. Over 6500 wines were entered into the competition this year and blind-tasted by 65 industry professionals ranging from sommeliers to winemakers. Suveg Cellars was awarded the following medals by the judge’s panel:
2016 Malbec Capital Requirements - Double Gold
2016 Petite Sirah/Petit Verdot Size Matters - Gold
2017 Barbera Liquid Assets - Gold
2016 Petite Sirah Sibling Rivalry - Silver
2016 Dolcetto Lacking Diplomacy - Silver
2016 Montepulciano Objection Sustained - Bronze
This medal win is a significant one for Suveg Cellars in more than one way. Not only does the SF Chronicle win take Suveg Cellars to 55 total international medals, but this is the second year in a row for Suveg Cellars to take home a Double Gold Medal. Last year the Suveg Cellars 2017 Viognier took home a Double Gold, paving the way for the 2016 Malbec Capital Requirements to emerge with a Double Gold this year.
“The San Francisco Chronicle staff called me after the results were released,” says Winemaker and Owner Craig Suveg. “They let us know that’s it’s very rare to win a Double Gold medal two years in a row at their competition.
Since 2010, Suveg Cellars has been setting the standard for high-quality winemaking in the Yucaipa Valley, leading the push to transform Yucaipa into California’s next wine destination. “We’re very pleased with the results of the SF Chronicle,” says Suveg. “Not only have we reached a significant benchmark, but results like these are helping to put the Yucaipa Valley on the map. Results like these are letting California know that the Yucaipa Valley can, and will be the home for the next generation of high quality, boutique wine production.”
Craig Suveg is the co-author of the Yucaipa Valley AVA Petition, which has been accepted as perfected by the Federal Government. Once it is published in the federal register, growers and vintners will be able to submit to the Alcohol Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB) for label approval and sell wine made from grapes in the Yucaipa Valley under the Yucaipa Valley name.
“55 medal is just the beginning for Suveg Cellars and the Yucaipa Valley,” says Suveg. “With a growing movement of vintners and interest in vinification, it’s becoming more inevitable by the day that this region will become California’s next great wine destination.”
